The problem

One till experience, three markets, three sets of rules and habits.

The approach

Designed a flexible core journey with market-specific variations instead of three separate products.

The outcome

A scalable pattern set that local teams could adapt without breaking the experience.

01

Overview

Tesco operates tills across Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary — each with its own legislation, payment behaviour and store operations.

  • Constraints

02

The Challenge

Localisation was being treated as translation. The real differences were legal, operational and behavioural.

03

Discovery

Research, stakeholder insights, data and a hard look at the existing experience.

04

Key Insights

  • Insight 01

    Regulation is a design constraint

Receipt and fiscal rules shaped the flow more than any preference.

  • Insight 02

    Same screen, different habits

Payment behaviour varied enough to change default states per market.

  • Insight 03

    Local teams need room

Rigid designs got worked around; flexible patterns got adopted.

05

Opportunity

What did the research tell us? Frame the opportunity as a design brief, not a feature list.

06

Ideation

Sketches, concepts, workshops and explorations.

07

Design

Wireframes, user flows, interaction design and high-fidelity screens.

08

Iteration

How the design changed once real people got their hands on it.

What I Learned

Keep this personal and honest — what you'd do differently, and what stuck with you.

Next Steps

  • Explore next

Add what you'd investigate with more time.

  • Improve next

Add what you'd refine or measure further.
